Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day everyone. It's a day that does not get recognized by everyone, but a day that I feel is very important. In fact, we really should have many more days that focus on making the world a cleaner, safer place for everyone. Rick & I try to do our part to help the environment. We have energy efficient light bulbs in the majority of our lights at home and we are avid recyclers. We have also started composting. Basically "composting is simply recycling food scraps, yard trimmings and other organic matter. Or more specifically the controlled decomposition of organic matter by microorganisms (mainly bacteria and fungi) into a humus-like product. What they leave behind can be used...
-as potting soil, -as mulch for the lawn and garden,-to increase air and water absorption in soil,-to decrease erosion,-to suppress weed growth, and-to improve soil texture (as defined by
www.Purdue.edu)
We plan to continue to add more eco-friendly things to our daily life. Possibly even one day use cloth diapers (at least part-time!) to cut back on all the disposable diaper waste. Everyone really can make a difference! Even small things like washing clothes in cold water instead of warm and refilling ink cartridges instead of buying new can really add up! Check out the site http://www.thedailygreen.com/ for more great tips & ideas!!!!

I am interested in composting. Do just put your scraps in a container, or just throw them out into the flower beds instead of the garbage?

we have a container for them. I guess it takes awhile for the stuff to turn into the mulch or whatever you call it! you have to let the container get sun & we turn it every now and then so oxygen gets into the pile to help it decompose
